Important Historical Ideas

  • Reliable - Reliability is a report that is trustworthy. Was this source or was this person reliable in the past? If your source is bias or one sided or has lied, many will have lost trust in you and won't believe your source.
  • Biased - has to do with favouritism or a slant. Biased can be towards or against someone or something. Sources can be biased towards or against.
  • Background Historical Knowledge - is knowledge about an event prior to knowing something.
  • Inference is a reasoned judgement based on a fact. Sometimes inferences can be wrong. They had to jump from what was right or wrong to what had happened.
  • Sources that Conflict  - Source of information were conflicted. We need to know that because when we think that we have one side of a story we need to consider the other side of the story.
An inference is an educated guess. By making an inference, you can make a conclusion based on information//evidence and reasoning that has been given to you.
The image above portrays what people thought of Muslims during 9-11, the title of this illustration is "9-11 mosque cartoon: More propaganda." If a person were to use this illustration as an historical evidence to base their knowledge and understanding on the idea of Muslims and what had happened during 9-11, many conflicts and problems would occur. This propaganda is no a reliable source because this illustration was created on October 15, 2010 when this event had happened around the date of September 11, 2001. This may have been created to show people how people reacted to the bombing. This illustration was biased to the Americans or the people who were against the Muslims and is against the Muslims. A background information of what had happened on September 11, 2001, how the Americans and other religions' point of view of the situation and Muslims are, and who were in charge of the situation and bombings and the aftermath would help the audience understand the illustration better. Based on this drawing, I can infer that the artist, Mike Keefe, wants the reader to be aware of the different point of views and opinions on other religions and that the readers shouldn't be stereotypical and shouldn't label everyone that is part of that religion as "violent." I think that the author wanted the audience to reflect on how they treat other people and how without them even knowing that they may stereotype and label a group of people a hurtful name. Finally, there are many sources that may conflict with this image including people that may be Muslim or who have loved ones who are part of a religion that is labeled as a hurtful title.
